Neither Contained, nor Hysterical. Beyond the Medicalization of Desire

Abstract
This article questions the relationships between inherited preconceptions of female hysteria and desire as a shortcoming. Using the film Stonehearst Asylum, it argues that the affirmative conception of desire can be separated from a negative tradition. Through a case of hysteria documented by Dr. Charcot at La Salpêtrière, the film reveals the negative conditioning of women from the creation of a sick female body and how essential it is to explore other models of understanding desire that allow for a broader reassessment of the will to power and the margins of life. With the help of Deleuze and Guattari, the author proposes an alternative approach to understanding desire that questions certain principles of legitimation of a current discourse that reproduces gender violence, while at the same time making it possible to positively rethink new forms of subjectivity as a creative potential for desire and life.
